EGYPT is currently at a crossroads, after closing a chapter in its history with all the negative and positive aspects, but there is still a page left. It is then imperative to choose between getting drowned in political impasse and security or stability concerns, embarking on a fresh start and preserving its political status in the international and Arab communities. The country needs a government with the ability to achieve security, economic and political stability.
The long journey awaiting Egypt is not limited to the country alone, but the entire Arab world because it remains the shield of the region. The nation is in dire need of economic resurgence to prevent protests brought about by rising poverty and unemployment rates, especially since the current situation in the Arab world is similar to what happened in Europe after the Second World War. The only difference is that this time there is no massive destruction, no tens of millions of deaths and no militarized communities.
Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the fact that there has been a dearth in economic prospects, while the unemployment and poverty rates have continued to escalate, in addition to the lack of job opportunities, development projects and solid economic infrastructure. This situation prompted the search for a project that resembles the Marshall Plan which saved Europe from collapse, paving the way for its transformation into a huge economic power and stable political region within a few years and has remained as such for many decades.
Some countries, along with the Arab states, are said to have invested 200 to 300 billion dollars on the Marshall Plan. This amount would have been enough to improve the living conditions of the poor in several Arab countries like Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon, Tunisia and Algeria. We do not pray for these countries to fall into anarchy and hopeless economic condition.
Some people may have not noticed the deplorable economic situation in Egypt, which needs many years of work and billions of dollars to take on projects for comprehensive and advanced infrastructure work with the ability to absorb millions of youths. What is applicable in Egypt is possible in all Arab nations where the youths constitute 64 percent of the population, as well as other countries with an unemployment rate of 22 percent. These are ticking time bombs, waiting to explode anytime to transform these countries into another Somalia; thereby, adding to the growing number of unsuccessful Arab nations.
The revolution of the youths in Egypt has succeeded but it is not the end of the road. It is actually the beginning and everyone is waiting to see what it would bring in the coming days, for this revolution to fall into the ‘cycle’ of previous mistakes when we witnessed revolution after revolution, while wheels of violence keeps on turning.
If this happens, peaceful demonstrations would definitely escalate into civil war. All this can be prevented only through the formation of a government keen on achieving the dreams of the people, in addition to respecting international and regional treaties. We have started noticing attempts to disregard the stipulations of international agreements in the statements of some people in Egypt. This has resulted in doubts and fear for a huge security vacuum, which they would probably fill by regaining their stronghold on Sinai through the assistance of the international community.
Some of the world powers that have supported this revolution are then required to regain the people’s trust and ensure the success of the Arab Marshall Plan through effective participation in financing it, instead of issuing political statements. Will this be a real triumph for the people or will it remain a tool for the instigation of public revolt against the system?
