As if surveys are the only way to earn in this website, I never did surveys to start with (Italy and surveys don't exactly get along), you can earn a few cents watching videos and then just take some good tasks and together with bonuses you can earn plenty of coins (10-20 usd worth, most likely more if you're from USA).

Saying it's "slaving" -IS- nonsense, you're meant to do this as a hobby and it doesn't/shouldn't be an alternative to a real job.

If you don't feel comfortable with it you don't have to try it.
Some members find it useful, such as Pay Per Call offers for US members which pay a very high amount, and also some tasks are very generous.
